Rights and Responsibilities
26 January Special | A Message to the Public
We often speak proudly about our rights.
Freedom of speech. Equality before law. Right to life and dignity.
These rights define us as citizens of a Republic.
But rights do not exist alone.
Every right carries a responsibility.
The right to speak demands responsibility to speak truthfully.
The right to equality demands responsibility to reject discrimination.
The right to freedom demands responsibility to respect others’ freedom.
A society that demands rights but avoids responsibilities slowly weakens its democracy.
Responsibility does not begin in Parliament.
It begins at home, on the street, in classrooms, and workplaces.
Democracy fails not when rights are denied, but when responsibilities are ignored.
Following rules, respecting institutions, and standing against injustice are not sacrifices.
They are the price of living in a Republic.
