1️⃣ Historical Background (Chinese Civil War, 1949)
The roots of the China–Taiwan conflict lie in the Chinese Civil War between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Kuomintang (KMT). In 1949, Mao Zedong established the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on the mainland, while Chiang Kai-shek and the Republic of China (ROC) government retreated to Taiwan.
Since then, Beijing has regarded Taiwan as a breakaway province, while Taiwan has evolved into a separate democratic political entity.
2️⃣ The “One China” Policy
The “One China” principle asserts that there is only one sovereign state called China, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of it. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) insists that countries wishing to maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing must not recognize Taiwan as an independent state.

3️⃣ Strategic Ambiguity – The US Position

This policy aims to deter both Chinese invasion and unilateral Taiwanese declaration of independence.
4️⃣ Taiwan’s Democratic Evolution
Unlike mainland China’s one-party system, Taiwan has developed into a vibrant multi-party democracy with regular elections, an independent judiciary, and civil liberties.
This political divergence has deepened ideological and strategic differences.
