Special Topic – Iran Political System (Page 1) Foundations of the Islamic Republic & Supreme Authority

1️⃣ Historical Background (1979 Islamic Revolution)

Iran’s present political system emerged after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini established the Islamic Republic, introducing a hybrid system combining republican institutions with clerical authority.

The ideological foundation of this system is based on the doctrine of Velayat-e Faqih (Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist).

2️⃣ What is Velayat-e Faqih?

Velayat-e Faqih grants ultimate political and religious authority to a qualified Islamic jurist (Supreme Leader). Under this doctrine, democratic institutions operate within a framework of religious supervision.

  • ✔ Supreme Leader holds ultimate constitutional authority
  • ✔ Religious oversight over elected bodies
  • ✔ Combination of theocracy and republic

3️⃣ Role of the Supreme Leader

The Supreme Leader is the highest authority in Iran. His powers include:

  •  Appointment of the head of judiciary
  •  Command over armed forces and IRGC
  •  Control over state broadcasting
  •  Approval of presidential election results
  •  Final say in foreign and security policy

Although the President manages day-to-day governance, strategic decisions ultimately fall under the Supreme Leader’s authority.

4️⃣ Nature of Iran’s Political Structure

Iran is often described as a hybrid political system — combining electoral democracy with clerical oversight. While citizens directly elect the President and Parliament, key institutions remain under religious supervision.

📚 Examination Perspective
